Yesterday morning we welcomed home 250 campers and CSL 2018 began. After the “Big Scream,” where campers are screaming and running off the buses, everyone filed into the dining hall for a lunch filled with endless quesadillas and dancing. The first afternoon of the session included taking bunk pictures and receiving camp t-shirts, learning about the waterfront and nature around camp, taking swim tests, getting checked for lice, and unpacking.
After dinner, camp split up into their villages for their evening programs. Cayuga and Mohawk both had tryouts for their village leagues, Cayuga Hockey League and Mohawk National League. Onondaga was “shipwrecked,” and their program included doing chalk art on the tennis courts. Seneca found out their Seneca families and then did a lip-synch activity. Finally, Tuscarora created hilarious rule skits and received hand carved wooden necklaces with their count off numbers on them.
After snack, we gathered for Opening Ceremonies on the O-Rec stage, where each village and program area introduced their staff members to camp. Summer 2018 officially commenced at the fire circle where all of CSL came together for a song session to close out the first day.
Here is what some of the campers had to say about the first day of the summer:
Harper C., O4: “My favorite part of yesterday was the campfire at the end of the day.”
Waylon J., C3: “What I love about the first day is unpacking and making my bed.”
Jared S., C3: “I liked the opening ceremonies because it was entertaining.”
Matt S., Tusc: “Team bonding at ropes is great! We’re all having a really fun time! #YEAHTUSC”
Eric R., M4: “It’s not always about hitting the ball but about the ball hitting your bat.”
Keenan S., C4: “I like Cayuga because I think it’s a very nice place to be since the Cayuga campers change every year and new people come in and I just think that’s so amazing. I’m sad it’s my last year!”
Today is the first day of regular periods and campers will rotate to various program areas around camp. Tonight is Shabbat, we will continue to go “dark” on Shabbat, so there will be no posting on any form of CSL social media. We cannot wait for what the rest of the session will bring and look forward to keeping you updated on what is happening here at 200 Camp Road!
